With our commitment to student success, scholarly research and inclusive
excellence in mind the University of Delaware Library, Museums and Press is
seeking a collaborative, innovative and thoughtful leader to serve as Head,
Cataloging and Metadata Department. The successful candidate will provide
leadership both in managing current staff and services and in
collaboratively envisioning and implementing evolving services of this
user-oriented department, to ensure access to and description of Library,
Museums and Press materials through a variety of platforms. This is
especially important as we move to a new discovery platform over the course
of this school year.

The Cataloging and Metadata Department is comprised of a 12-member team
including 6 librarians and 6 non-exempt staff that provides cataloging and
metadata support for the Library, Museums and Press in all formats,
including monographs, serials, databases, videos, multimedia and ephemera.
The department consists of four areas: original cataloging, special
collections cataloging, copy cataloging, and metadata management and
participates in OCLC Member Merge Project and is a member/participant in
NACO. Faculty, staff, students and other scholars depend on accurate and
timely access to research materials in a variety of languages that are
cataloged by the department.

Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Acquisitions and
Collections Services, major responsibilities include:


   - Provide leadership and strategic direction for the Cataloging and
   Metadata Department which includes 6 librarians and 6 non-exempt staff.
   - Supervise department staff, including hiring, scheduling, performance
   management and workload balance; train, evaluate and guide department staff
   in routine as well as original and complex cataloging, classification and
   authority work for materials in all formats.
   - Lead Library, Museums and Press staff in the evolution of metadata
   practices related to MARC and non-MARC formats.  Lead efforts to optimize
   metadata output to expose collections across the Library, Museums and
   Press; provide expertise and guidance in metadata schemas and standards and
   provide training as needed; cultivate and support an environment of
   exploration and implementation of new approaches to cataloging and
   management of metadata.
   - Monitor national and international trends in metadata creation and
   guide on-going review and revision of Library, Museums and Press-wide
   metadata/cataloging policies and procedures to ensure proper application of
   appropriate standards.
   - Collaborate with other library units and departments to lead
   organization-wide efforts to address issues of diversity, inclusion and
   social justice in cataloging and metadata practices.
   - Perform original and complex copy cataloging for print and non-print
   materials using local and national standards including MARC and other
   metadata schema.
   - Develop and monitor progress of cataloging and database maintenance
   projects, formulating practices to increase the efficiency and production
   of the department
   - Manage participation in cooperative metadata endeavors such as NACO
   and the OCLC Member Merge Project.
   - Maintain procedural and training documentation for departmental staff.
   - Collaborate with other library units and departments in order to
   review and develop procedures to solve complex problems.
   - Participate in the management of library operations and services to
   ensure organizational effectiveness as a member of the Library Management
   Council.
   - Actively engage in professional development and other scholarly
   activities.


Qualifications:


   - Master’s degree in library and information science.
   - Three years of successful supervisory, management, or leadership
   experience with a demonstrated commitment to mentoring, training, and staff
   development.
   - Demonstrated experience in supervision and training of cataloging and
   metadata librarians.
   - At least five years of professional work experience with original
   cataloging, subject analysis, and classification in all formats and
   authority control, including recognized rules and standards including RDA,
   AACR2, LCC, LCSH, MARC21.
   - Experience with information access standards and metadata schemes such
   as Dublin Core, EAD, MODS, METS, VRA Core etc.
   - Demonstrated experience in analyzing, managing, and developing
   cataloging and metadata workflows.
   - Ability to manage projects, develop policies or drive library
   initiatives across functional lines; broader knowledge of technical
   services workflows preferred.
   - Broad knowledge of cataloging issues, trends, and best practices in an
   academic library.
   - Written knowledge of at least one language other than English.
   - Commitment to service excellence and professional growth.
   - Commitment to fostering an inclusive educational environment and
   workplace.
   - Commitment to fostering a diverse and anti-racist educational
   environment and workplace and an ability to work effectively with a diverse
   faculty, staff, and student population.
   - Experience with ExLibris products including ALMA and Primo, preferred.
   - Knowledge of standards and procedures for BIBCO, NACO, PCC, SACO,
   preferred.
   - Knowledge of library linked data standards and applications, including
   BIBFRAME, and ability to adapt and extend traditional library standards to
   meet the needs of a linked data environment, preferred.

Appointment: Continuing appointment is based on relevant professional
experience and expected at the rank of Associate Librarian / Library
Department Head I (pay grade 32E) or full Librarian / Library Department
Head II (pay grade 33E), per the University of Delaware Library Rank and
Promotion System. Department head responsibilities are assigned for a
renewable five-year term.

Compensation: Salary is expected between the 1st quartile and the midpoint
of pay grade, as outlined on the University of Delaware 37.5 Hour General
Structure, with an additional salary supplement for Department Head
appointment.
