The Georgia Tech Library seeks an innovative and experienced cataloging librarian to lead our newly reorganized Technical Services Department.  Technical Services plays a vital role for the library and the institution in providing access to content owned or accessed by the library and encompasses Acquisitions, Cataloging, Interlibrary Loan, and Reserves functional areas. This position reports directly to the Associate Dean for Content, Access, and User Services and represent the interests of the Technical Services Department as a whole by leading strategic initiatives related to improving access and discovery.  This position will lead, mentor, coach, and evaluate two faculty and one staff manager position while also providing leadership to the entire Technical Services team that includes 7 Technical Services Associates.
This collaborative and service-oriented librarian will also take the lead role in developing strategic cataloging and metadata initiatives for the Library and serve as the lead cataloging expert for the organization by providing strategic leadership, consultation, training, and expertise in cataloging in a variety of metadata schemas for resources in all formats. This person will help provide long-term strategies to deal with MARC and non-MARC metadata initiatives and provide direction for staff in techniques and new methodologies, such as RDA and BIBFRAME. Additionally, the Head of Technical Services is expected to serve on internal and external committees and collaborate with partners across the state.

Faculty Status
The position will be appointed as a member of the Instructional Faculty of the library, is non-tenure track, and is required to go through the review and promotion process for librarians and archivists. Library faculty have an effort distribution of 80% excellence in assigned duties, 10% scholarship, and 10% professional service to the library profession or the institute. The Library faculty in this position must actively participate in professional and scholarly activities, including institute and professional committees, research, and publication. This is a full-time faculty appointment. The Georgia Tech Library Faculty offers flexible work schedules, teleworking options*, professional development, and a healthy work-life balance. Salary and rank are commensurate with credentials and experience. Minimum starting salary is $85,000 annually.  *This is not a remote position


Responsibilities

  *   Plans, organizes, maintains and manages the operations of the Technical Services Department including Cataloging, E-Resource Management, Acquisitions, Reserves, and Interlibrary Loan.
  *   Participates in long-range planning, working in collaboration with library leadership, library faculty and staff, and others to develop strategic plans supporting library technical services.
  *   Hires, trains, supervises, develops, and evaluates Technical Services Faculty and staff.
  *   Provides expertise and leadership to staff on original cataloging, copy cataloging, physical processing, batch loading, and database maintenance.
  *   Provides leadership in pursuing new opportunities for resource management, access and discovery and for the Library’s involvement in national programs.
  *   Leads projects and teams related to the discovery and access of Library content.
  *   Develops, communicates, documents, and trains staff on local metadata policies and procedures.
  *   Collaborates with Technical Services Librarians and other GT Library colleagues to ensure a unified strategy for resource acquisition, discovery, delivery, and access of scholarly resources.
  *   Works with collaborative partners outside the GT Library; develops long-term strategies to provide optimal access and discovery and serves as a metadata consultant to larger joint projects and initiatives.
  *   Serves as the lead in exploring innovative tools and methods in streamlining processes for creating, cleaning up, and optimizing bibliographic metadata.
  *   Develops an expertise in linked data, semantic web applications, and ontologies for discovery of bibliographic data and information.
  *   Performs and advises on original cataloging and authority control.

Required qualifications

  *   Master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited program or ALA-recognized foreign equivalent.
  *   Minimum of three years of experience cataloging a diverse range of materials.
  *   Two or more years of progressively responsible supervisory experience.
  *   Original and copy cataloging experience in an academic, public or special library setting utilizing current cataloging metadata standards and schema, MARC21, LCC, LCSH, RDA, FRBR, and emerging linked data standards using metadata management tools (e.g., RDA, MARCEdit, OCLC Connexion, Access, authority control, batch processing techniques).
  *   Experience with an ILS and national bibliographic utility.
  *   Professional service, professional activity and contributions to scholarship sufficient for appointment at the rank of Librarian II, which requires a minimum of four years of professional experience.
  *   Excellent interpersonal, organizational, analytical, written and oral communications skills.
  *   Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion principles and practices.
  *   Evidence of professional contributions in the areas of library resource management.

Preferred qualifications

  *   Demonstrated track record of developing a diverse staff, fostering collegiality, encouraging change and innovation and engaging staff in the collaborative planning and delivery of user-centered service.
  *   Evidence of the ability to be an effective team leader who fosters an inclusive, efficient, and collegial workplace.
  *   Experience with Ex Libris’ Alma and Primo Systems.
  *   Continuing resource cataloging experience.
  *   Demonstrated experience with project management, including planning, communication, and assessment.
  *   Instruction and/or training experience.
  *   Reading knowledge of one or more languages other than English.
  *   Ex Libris Alma Certification
