The University of Arkansas Libraries seek an experienced cataloging librarian to manage Special Collections and serials cataloging. Reporting to the Director of Content Services, the cataloger performs original and complex copy cataloging for print and electronic resources, including the Libraries' digital collections. The cataloger collaborates with Special Collections and Archives, Digital Services, and other departments to ensure discoverability of library materials. The cataloger maintains knowledge of current and emerging cataloging and metadata standards, tools, and best practices, and contributes to departmental policies and procedures related to cataloging, catalog maintenance, and authority work. The cataloger is responsible for supervising the work of 2 full-time staff members and will serve on the leadership team for the Content Services Department.

Along with performance, this position includes research and creative work and service in keeping with the faculty requirements of the University of Arkansas. This position develops and disseminates a scholarly research agenda through publications, presentations, and other appropriate venues; participates in opportunities to serve the Libraries, university, and profession; and participates in professional development activities, including attending workshops, webinars, and conferences to augment existing training and skills.

Duties and Responsibilities: Performs original cataloging of monographs, serials, electronic resources, and rare book materials in a variety of languages and subject areas according to local and national standards (RDA, Library of Congress Program for Cooperative Cataloging Policy Statements, etc.). Manages copy cataloging for Special Collections materials and serials. Provides metadata support for digital projects in CONTENTdm. Contributes authority records to the local authority file and to the national Name Authority File (NAF) through the National Authority Cooperative Program (NACO). Creates and updates departmental documentation for cataloging and authority work. Stays informed of evolving cataloging and metadata trends, changes in best practices and standards, new cataloging software applications, and local technology changes. Participates in the development of local policies. Suggests ideas for improving workflows and creating efficiencies. Serves on the Content Services Leadership Group.

In the area of personnel management, responsible for hiring, development, and performance reviews for two FTE staff. Evaluates training needs and assists staff in acquiring the skills, knowledge, and competencies needed to improve job performance. Determines performance deficiencies and designs interventions. Assigns duties and projects, and monitors progress. Collaborates with other Content Services units and library departments to improve service.

Rank and Salary: Tenure-track, twelve-month faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant Librarian / Assistant Professor or Associate Librarian / Associate Professor. Starting salary: $55,000.

Benefits: Relocation allowance available. Benefits include TIAA or Fidelity Investments, 22 days of annual leave, tuition reduction, and health insurance.

Minimum Qualifications:

  *   Master's degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent. Candidates who received international degrees in library and information science not accredited by ALA will need to submit the foreign credential evaluation determination.
  *   A minimum of one year of experience with original cataloging
  *   Knowledge of cataloging rare book materials in an academic library setting
  *   Ability to communicate with multiple stakeholders across departments, including good written and oral communication skills
  *   Demonstrated experience with MARC21, AACR2, RDA, DCRM(B), LC classification, and LCSH
  *   Experience with OCLC and an integrated library system, such as Sierra or Alma/Primo
  *   Familiarity with cataloging tools, such as Cataloger's Desktop, RDA Toolkit, or Classification Web
  *   Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills, including meeting project deadlines
  *   Ability to work independently and to collaborate with others
  *   Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel
  *   Demonstrated commitment to building and supporting diversity

Preferred Qualifications:

  *   Two or more years of relevant professional cataloging or metadata experience in a mid- to large-sized academic or research library, or equivalent
  *   Experience with serials cataloging, including original cataloging and the creation of detailed, accurate holdings records
  *   Demonstrated relevant supervisory experience
  *   Experience creating and editing authority records through NACO
  *   Knowledge of batch loading of records and tools for manipulating bibliographic data such as MarcEdit and OpenRefine
  *   Demonstrated experience with non-MARC metadata standards, such as Dublin Core, MODS, or EAD
  *   Working knowledge of one or more non-English languages
  *   Experience in staff training and documenting technical processes
