Head of Metadata Research

Summary
The University of Pennsylvania Libraries seeks a forward-thinking, service-oriented, and versatile professional to serve as the Head of Metadata Research.  Reporting to the Director of Information Processing, this position will lead linked data and metadata projects and research for the Libraries.  Working collaboratively across the Libraries, the incumbent will develop a vision for the services, technologies and policies to enhance discovery of collections, following international standards and best practices for linked data and metadata.  She/he will work towards implementation of the vision, including transformation of existing library metadata into new schemas, and training of cataloging and metadata librarians in the creation and use of linked data.

Responsibilities
*             Develop an institutional strategy for the creation, management and dissemination of linked data and metadata. Collaborate with colleagues throughout the Libraries in the development of local metadata best practices, policies, and controlled vocabularies that reflect international standards.  Supervise interns and/or fellows working on metadata related projects.
*             Lead the Libraries' projects for linked data, including Linked Data for Production Phase 2 (LD4P2) and Share-Virtual Discovery Environment (Share-VDE), working with the Linked Data Team. Represent Penn at meetings for these projects and other international meetings relating to linked data, and contribute to the development of standards and best practices. Develop grant proposals for future projects.
*             Develop and implement training for cataloging and metadata librarians in the creation and use of linked data.
*             Work with IT staff to plan and coordinate systems-related projects, including creation, mapping and management of linked data and other metadata for digital collections and other library systems and services. Perform data analysis; create statistical reports and gather metrics.
*             Research and remain current with emerging linked data and metadata standards and digital library trends.

Qualifications
Required:
*             Graduate degree from an ALA-accredited program or the equivalent in education and experience.
*             Project management experience. Ability to take initiative, establishes priorities, implement efficient workflows, and create documentation. Exceptional organizational skills.
*             Familiarity with library linked data standards and applications, including BIBFRAME.
*             Proficient with metadata in a digital library environment; familiarity with traditional MARC-based systems.
*             Ability to use technology in creative ways to solve problems.  Working knowledge of metadata processing, batch-loading and transformation tools such as MarcEdit, Oxygen XML Editor, OpenRefine, and XSLT.
*             Strong service orientation.  Demonstrated support for diversity initiatives and a desire to create a welcoming and inclusive environment.
*             Ability to flourish in a high-intensity work environment and manage change.

Preferred:
*             Experience in resource description and authority control using international cataloging standards, principles, and identifier schemas (e.g., RDA, LRM, AACR2, LCSH, NACO, SACO, LC Classification, MARC 21 formats, VIAF, ORCID, and ISNI). Working knowledge of bibliographic utilities, integrated library systems, and cataloging tools.
*             Knowledge of one or more non-English languages.
