Metadata Management Librarian - 74309

Description
 This is a 3-year fixed term position posted at the Librarian levels 1 and
2.

Stanford University Libraries is seeking an enthusiastic and resourceful
metadata librarian responsible for the accessioning of digital object
metadata into the Stanford Digital Repository (SDR). Reporting to the
Metadata Coordinator, the Metadata Management Librarian will ensure the
timely flow of objects and their metadata into the SDR and discovery
environments through the application of metadata principles and best
practices for digital resources. The Metadata Management Librarian will
also be responsible for monitoring metadata accessioning workflows and for
complex metadata remediation in the SDR.

CORE DUTIES:

• Accession digital object metadata into the SDR, including:
o Analysis of supplied metadata, and transformation of files and metadata
to match policies, standards, and specifications
o Contribution to definition and documentation of the accessioning process
o Quality assessment, troubleshooting, and remediation of accessioned
metadata
• Analyze metadata across all digital collections in order to harmonize
conflicts and inconsistencies and make them function effectively in a
unified discovery environment
• Perform metadata analysis and remediation at the project level
• Monitor status of objects during and after metadata loads and resolve
workflow errors
• Develop and maintain working spreadsheets for digital object metadata
creation and authority work by Metadata Development Unit staff
• Work closely with Metadata Coordinator to enact local metadata policies,
best practices, and common standards
• Maintain close working relationships with DLSS staff related to the
development of the SDR, data models, and the administration of its content,
and the overall accessioning queue and process
• Participate in large scale research and development projects related to
metadata discovery, interoperability, and identity management, including
the development of Stanford’s linked data environment

Qualifications
 MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited library school or the equivalent

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Deep appreciation for and demonstrated understanding of the purpose and
structure of library-related discovery metadata
• Familiarity with MARC and current cataloging practices
• Familiarity with MODS and/or other similar metadata standards
• Familiarity with XML, RDF, and other machine actionable languages;
familiarity with, or ability to learn, linked data principles and standards
• Demonstrated ability with, or proven ability to learn, skills such as
XSLT or scripting to transform and remediate metadata
• Knowledge of non-bibliographic metadata standards such as technical,
preservation, structural, packaging, and transfer metadata schemes
• Demonstrated ability to use online and PC-based applications for data
analysis and reporting
• Excellent analytical and problem solving skills combined with attention
to detail for complex detail-oriented work
• Excellent oral and written communications
• Ability to work independently, as a team member, and across
organizational boundaries in a highly demanding environment
• Flexibility to be organized, productive and effective in a dynamic
environment, involved with a variety of simultaneous projects
Other relevant skills, knowledge & abilities may include:
• Broad knowledge of library repository functions, services, and
requirements
• Experience with metadata transformations and cross-walking tools
• Familiarity with Stanford University Libraries and its Digital Library
environment

Librarian 2 level requires a minimum of 3 year relevant experience.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Constantly sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
• Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasps lightly/fine manipulation,
grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull
objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
• Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand,
kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other).
• Rarely use a telephone, operate hand controls.
• Must be able to push and maneuver a fully-loaded cart weighing up to 650
pounds that requires an initial push force up to 50 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• May work in confined spaces and at heights 4-10 feet; be exposed to dust
