The future of MARC Holdings. The ALCTS CRS Committee on Holdings is pleased to present two speakers who will discuss the efforts to include local MARC Holding information into BIBFRAME and FOLIO.
BIBFRAME and Serials Holdings: What Next?
Efforts continue to map serials to BIBFRAME. One of the major issues facing serials catalogers is how serials holdings can be mapped in the BIBFRAME model. Much of the experimentation has been centered on how the BIBFRAME property "enumerationAndChronology" works at both the instance and the item level in BIBFRAME 2.0. Chronological data for serials in MACR21 is currently found in both the bibliographic description, and in volume holdings using MARC Format for Holdings (MFHD). CONSER, Zepheira, and BIBFLOW are all working to address serials cataloging issues. This presentation will provide a review of the work currently underway to address issues with serials holdings in BIBFRAME, and discuss recommendations and possible options.
Roman S. Panchyshyn is an Associate Professor, Catalog Librarian, at Kent State University Libraries. He currently serves as Member-At-Large on the ALA ALCTS Cataloging and Metadata Management Section (CaMMS) Executive Committee, on the LITA/ALCTS Authority Control Interest Group, and chair of the OhioLINK Database Management and Standards Committee (DMSC). He is also the chair of the Kent State University Libraries Diversity Committee. Research interests include linked data, technical services management, and library diversity issues. He holds a B.A. in East European History and an MLIS from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec.
FOLIO and holdings.
FOLIO is a community effort to develop an open source library services platform. FOLIO developers and domain experts are currently working together to develop a model for holdings data that accommodates the complexities of e-resources and supports formats other than MARC. This process will also take into consideration the need to create a model that will be compatible with BIBFRAME in the future. Kristen Wilson, a FOLIO project participant, will describe the current state of the work on FOLIO's model for holdings data."
Kristen Wilson is Associate Head of Acquisitions and Discovery at the North Carolina State University Libraries. She manages the department's serials unit and has participated several library systems development projects. These include E-Matrix, a homegrown e-resources management system; The Global Open Knowledgebase (GOKb); and FOLIO, an open source library services platform. She has published on the topics of knowledgebases, electronic resources management, and workflow analysis in journals such as Serials Review and Library Resources and Technical Services.
