East Asian Collections Librarian
The University of Virginia Library seeks a librarian to develop and manage East Asian collections. We are looking for creative individuals who are excited by the prospect of working at a forward-looking organization during times of great change. Known for the strength and variety of its collections and leadership in digital initiatives, the Library embraces respect, integrity, inclusion, innovation and collaboration in our work within the University, with peer institutions, and with the worldwide community. A staff of 220 manage 11 libraries that serve a vibrant and diverse scholarly community of 15,000 undergraduates, 6,000 graduate students, and 2,000 teaching and research faculty, and visitors from the public and other institutions.
The University of Virginia Library connects users with the resources necessary to support research, teaching, and instruction in East Asian studies. The incumbent in this position supports that mission by developing and managing East Asian collections in all formats, as well as collaborating in the management of Alderman Library's East Asian Studies Room. This position will provide the strategic planning, development, and coordination necessary to achieve this goal. He/she will also maintain numerous relationships, working closely with external vendors, UVa's Research Librarian for East Asian Studies, and staff from across the library system. This position will collaborate with other Library staff to ensure cost-effective, efficient, and ethical acquisition and deployment of descriptive metadata to support the University's mission.
Education: Master Degree in Library/Information science or other relevant Master degree.
Degree: Master's degree or equivalent experience required
* Fluency in Chinese or Japanese
* Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with a wide range of groups and individuals both internal and external to the Library
* Able to effectively engage with colleagues from the Library
* Able to effectively engage with vendors of (CJK) Chinese, Japanese, and Korean materials
* Additional proficiency in either Chinese, Japanese, or Korean
* Project planning
* Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
* Commitment to professional development
Anticipated Salary: $50,000-60,000
