The Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) University Library (http://www.ulib.iupui.edu) seeks a strategic and innovative individual to serve in a tenure-track position as Metadata Librarian. This position reports to the Head, Bibliographic & Metadata Services.

The Metadata Librarian provides expertise and leadership on metadata and is responsible for the strategic coordination and management of metadata for all University Library digital collections. Responsibilities include application profile development, metadata creation and platform training, quality control and approval of metadata, and ensuring compliance with local and DPLA metadata standards. The incumbent is also responsible for investigating and implementing new and emerging metadata models, including metadata best practices for 3-D scans of cultural objects.

Ranked 5th by U.S. News and World Report in “Up-and-Coming National Universities,” IUPUI is an urban research and health sciences campus with 18 schools and 250 degree programs. The successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge of and experience with metadata schema and their application in traditional and digital library environments, the potential to fulfill the requirements for promotion and tenure, and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative organization.

Primary Responsibilities:

·         Assessment and application of metadata principles and practices.

·         Create and maintain local documentation on metadata standards and application guidelines.

·         Develop and provide training to library staff regarding metadata creation in a variety of platforms.

·         Ensure metadata quality and compliance with local and DPLA metadata standards.

·         Ensure harmonization of metadata standards across collections in each platform to facilitate goal of interoperability and optimize discoverability in both internal and external discovery environments.

·         Proactively engage with University Library Center for Digital Scholarship, Special Collections & Archives, and Herron Art Library in establishing appropriate approaches (both manual and automated) for the creation of metadata for individual projects.

·         Investigate and implement improvements to metadata procedures and workflows.

·         Investigate and evaluate current and developing metadata best practices and their possible application to the library’s digital collections.

·         Maintain awareness of trends in cataloging, metadata, access and discovery.
Required Qualifications:

·         Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited Library/Information Science program.

·         Knowledge of and experience with metadata schema and their application, including the ability to effectively apply metadata in traditional and digital library environments, and controlled vocabularies.

·         Ability to learn and utilize current and emerging metadata schema such as MODS, METS, EAD, and TEI.

·         Familiarity with repository software platforms, especially CONTENTdm, DSpace, and OJS.

·         Ability to work and excel in both individual and collaborative environments.

·         Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

·         Strong attention to detail.
Desired Qualifications:

·         Familiarity with Fedora, Hydra, and ArchivesSpace.

·         Original cataloging experience using the RDA cataloging standard.

·         Experience with cross-walking, data conversion and batch data ingest and/or conversion.

·         Knowledge of current and emerging linked data models, including RDF and BIBFRAME.

·         Project management and/or training experience.
Minimum salary is $48,500 with additional funding for professional development and travel. Benefits include 22 vacation days, 9 paid holidays, health/dental insurance options, and retirement contributions of 10% to either TIAA-CREF or Fidelity plans.  A start-up package includes $10,000 for moving and additional professional development expenses.
