--Apologies for cross-posting--
Paper proposals are invited for a Technical Services panel at SALALM 61,
this year's annual conference of the Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin
American Library Materials[1], hosted by the University of Virginia in
Charlottesville.
Technical Services is sometimes perceived as a values-free zone of
librarianship where we simply apply rules and routines to support access to
library resources. However, the recent ALA Council resolution calling for
the subject heading “Illegal aliens” to be changed to “Undocumented
immigrants” reminds us that there is no neutral ground in our profession
where questions of ethics and hegemony can be ignored.
In keeping with the conference theme, “‘Nuestro norte es el sur’: Mapping
Resistance and Resilience in Latin American, Caribbean, and Iberian
Studies,” we invite papers that take a critical approach to Technical
Services, especially in relation to Latin American, Iberian, or Latino
studies. Possible topics might include:
1. Efforts to reform controlled vocabularies or make cataloging standards
more culturally relevant
2. North-South collaboration between librarians and archivists on issues
related to resource description
3. Projects that aim to increase access to hidden collections or improve
the search and discovery experience for underserved populations
Please contact us by this Wednesday, January 27, if you are interested in
presenting, and we’ll coordinate to flesh out the proposal from there.
Thank you!
