[Metadatalibrarians] Metadatalibrarians Digest, Vol 150, Issue 3

Hi Rachel,

I asked this same question in the DLF Metadata Support Group Slack channel. I was asking about MODS specifically, but the consensus I received was to use the universal xlink:href attribute in the accessCondition element for the URI and to continue using the accessCondition text field for the human-readable statement.

Hope that helps!

Hello colleagues,

Has anyone begun using the RightsStatements.org statements in their metadata? The usage guidelines say to enter the URI in a rights statement field, which is easy enough. What I'm struggling with is whether to include a human-readable rights statement as well, and where to put it. Any examples in the wild would be great.

Thanks!

Rachel Shaevel

Hi Rachel,

There has been some discussion about this in the Hydra community recently:

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/hydra-community/6jPQnHklJXc

You can find a few organizations that are implementing with whom you might follow up.

Cheers,
Sharon

Hi Rachel,

We have a list of rights statements that users can chose from a drop down
menu - so it's a controlled list. The URI most likely needs to be added in
the code in the config file (if you are using fedora/sufia) and that way
the display name is human readable. But it may depend on your architecture.
More than happy to share what we have done here at Galter Health Sciences
Library with you.

Feel free to give me a call, I'm few blocks away from you :)

Our current licensing is a controlled value drop-down which displays the
license name. We then use the same for the display. We have an FAQ pop up
with summaries of licenses in the submission side but not in public display.

However we don't have Rights Statements incorporated yet. But that's our
current setup and we could work those into it. The question is how to
manage old CC 3.0 licenses we really don't want people using without losing
them if the record gets edited, CC 4.0 for self-depositors, and Rights
Statements for our cultural heritage materials without it becoming an
unmanageable mess.
