[Metadatalibrarians] crosswalking metadata

Hi Sarah,

At Colorado State University, we have developed a 'discovery tool' based on VuFind, that harvests metadata from our online catalog (III system), or Institutional Repository (DigiTool from ExLibris), our Libraries web pages, and coming soon, our CONTENTdm database.

With this tool, there is very little need for moving metadata from one system to another. An exception is when we digitize and existing print resource that has been cataloged in our OPAC--then the MARC metadata is extracted, enhanced with certain requirements of our IR, and then transformed to MARC-XML to load into our IR with the digitized version of the resource (such as a digitized thesis or dissertation). In this case, the Discovery tool would find both digital and print copies, as the access points are the same for both versions.

We made a decision early on in the IR that we would not catalog in the OPAC something that had metadata (MARC-XML or otherwise) in the IR. We have a few exceptions from before this decision was made, but ultimately we knew we would use a resource such as VuFind to locate materials regardless of which silo held the metadata.

--
--I have a general crosswalking question.
--
--I have been asked to crosswalk metadata several times so the same info
--is sitting in different databases. This is possible, but wouldn't it
--be better to have the data sit in one place and be searched by the
--different systems? Are people out there doing a lot of moving around
--of metadata so it will appear in a Library catalog, ContentDm and an
--Institutional repository search?
--
--Thanks,
