[Metadatalibrarians] crosswalking metadata

I have a general crosswalking question.

I have been asked to crosswalk metadata several times so the same info is sitting in different databases.  This is possible, but wouldn't it be better to have the data sit in one place and be searched by the different systems?  Are people out there doing a lot of moving around of metadata so it will appear in a Library catalog, ContentDm and an Institutional repository search?
