It includes hands-on exercises that cumulatively build knowledge and skills. Participants will explore the following:
· Introduction to controlled vocabulary and thesaurus design
· Types of controlled vocabularies
· Thesaurus planning and design
· Thesaurus construction and development
· Hierarchical structure and relationships
· Thesaurus display and navigation
· Thesaurus implementation and management
This workshop is an online equivalent of an intensive two-day on-site workshop. It is one of the ALCTS/PCC Catalogers Learning Workshop, Cataloging for the 21 st Century workshops intended to update catalogers’ knowledge and skills for the Digital Library Environment. For further information and to preview the original version of workshop content, see: http://www.loc.gov/catworkshop/courses/thesaurus/index.html
Intended Audience:
This workshop is designed for practicing catalogers from all types of libraries and for anyone interested in designing controlled vocabularies and thesauri for digital libraries, websites, or other online library-like applications.
Time Commitment:
The workshop should take participants approximately 4-6 hours per week. This is an “asynchronous” online learning workshop; there will be no “real-time” sessions during which everyone must be online at the same time. The workshop will be structured into weekly units with deadlines for submitting exercises at the end of each week. Within that framework participants may work through the content at whatever pace, location, and time of day they wish.
Workshop Delivery:
The workshop will be delivered through the D2L online learning courseware. A few days before the workshop begins, participants will receive a login ID and password for accessing the workshop web site. Content will be delivered in the form of PDF files and accompanying video presentations in both Windows Media and Real Player formats. Interaction with the instructor and other participants will take place through listserv-like discussion forums internal to the workshop site. The site includes an area for submitting exercises. There are no required readings beyond the workshop content delivered within the workshop website. Upon completion of the workshop, including submission of all the exercises, each participant will receive a certificate in PDF format for printing.
