It depends on what you are describing.  The answer to your question lies in the One-to-One Principle, which states:  "In general Dublin Core metadata describes one manifestation or version of a resource, rather than assuming that manifestations stand in for one another" (Diane Hillmann, Using Dublin Core, http://dublincore.org/documents/usageguide/).  Following this, recording page count in the Format.Extent element would generally only be appropriate in a record for the print version.  In a DC record for a digital reproduction, the Source element allows you to make reference to (or record information about) the analog/print version, without compromising the One-to-One Principle.

A quick question. I am determining where to put the number of pages in a Dublin Core record. The definition of format.extent indicates to me that It is appropriate to put the page count there, but, I notice that many other digital repositories use format.extent for the size of the file in bytes.
