Metadata for Digital Collections
Eight-Week Online Workshop
Dates: September 1 – October 23, 2009
Fee: $325.00 ($299 for Students)
Limited to 25 participants
Registration Deadline: August 21, 2009
Description:
This eight-week online workshop provides a substantial introduction to creating and managing descriptive metadata for digital image collections in libraries, archives, and museums. It includes hands-on exercises in creating metadata for digital images using Dublin Core and MODS, and a little using VRA. Participants will be introduced to commonly-used controlled vocabularies for digital collections, as well as to XML, OAI, metadata harvesting, mapping, and interoperability. The workshop will also cover metadata standards selection, local metadata scheme design, and documentation in the form of data dictionaries and application profiles.
The workshop should take participants approximately 4-6 hours per week. This is an “asynchronous” type of online learning workshop; there will be no “real-time” sessions during which everyone must be online at the same time. The workshop will be structured into units with a set of deadlines for submitting exercises each week. Within that framework participants may work through the content at whatever pace, location, and time of day they wish. After exercises have been submitted, the instructor will provide feedback on them. Sometime during the week before the workshop begins, participants will receive a login ID and password to the workshop web site, which includes content documents, discussion forums, and an area for submitting exercises. Interaction with the instructor and other participants takes place through listserv-like discussion forums internal to the course web site. Upon completion of the workshop, each person will receive a certificate in PDF format for printing.
Audience:
The workshop is intended for anyone interested in learning how to create and manage metadata for digital collections. No prior experience with metadata is required. This is an introductory-level continuing education workshop for those new to metadata and those with some experience who want a solid overview and grounding in basic descriptive metadata concepts and practice.
