DESCRIPTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The University of Kentucky Libraries seeks a knowledgeable professional to serve as the Coordinator of the Cataloging and Metadata Unit. Under the direction of the Head of the Access Records Management Department, the Coordinator of Cataloging and Metadata provides cataloging support and expertise for materials in a diverse range of formats and languages, using appropriate metadata and cataloging standards. The Coordinator works closely with the Coordinators of the Special Formats and Database Integrity/Special Projects units.
The Coordinator hires, trains, and supervises the work of approximately 3 FTE support staff and 1 FTE librarian in the Cataloging and Metadata Unit. The Coordinator assists as needed in the production of MARC records for the library catalog and is responsible for cataloging materials in a variety of formats, including the creation of original bibliographic and authority records. Additionally, participates in evaluating potential bulk record loads and manages loads as appropriate. The Coordinator works closely with staff throughout Collections and Technical Services and other divisions to provide access to the Libraries' collections; serves as consultant and trainer for all Collections and Technical Services staff in new cataloging and metadata processes, as well as assists in preparing documentation of cataloging and metadata practices and procedures; assists in planning and implementing initiatives to forward the libraries' goals for creating new cataloging environments.
The Coordinator of Cataloging and Metadata is responsible for organizing access to networked information resources using traditional and emerging metadata schema, and for integrating production of metadata into the balance of the work of the Collections and Technical Services Division, including responsibility for training staff members in the production of metadata. In collaboration with Special Collections and Digital Programs, the Coordinator assumes responsibility as the lead cataloging specialist for digital planning projects. Actively participates in the libraries' research and development efforts and in local and national discussions relating to the access and retrieval, of objects in digital library systems.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:ALA-accredited MLS. Substantial cataloging experience in multiple formats. Knowledge and expertise in traditional cataloging and authority standards. Working knowledge of metadata schemes other than MARC (e.g. XML, EAD, TEI, DC). Supervisory and training experience. A strong combination of interpersonal, bibliographic, and technical skills. Commitment to ongoing professional development and activity and evidence of the ability to meet University of Kentucky requirements for promotion and tenure required.
Preferred Education/Experience: Experience working in a research university environment. Experience managing access to digital materials.
