[Metadatalibrarians] Looking for some reference sources about metadata

Hi all,

I may have an opportunity to do some work with UCLA colleagues on technical, administrative, and preservation metadata. I don't know whether anything will happen, nor do I know exactly the scope of the work. But I was wondering if any of you have a favorite book or website you can recommend to me for background reading.

The phrase being used here is "metadata management" as part of "project management"; that is, identifying the kinds of metadata needed, and how to machine-apply them in a collection of mixed objects. For example, in an image collection it may not be desirable to digitize all the images at the same resolution, as some may require more precision than others. In this case, how do you automate the process of specifying in the technical metadata which object has which resolution? Where in the workflow could this be most efficiently done?

Any advice about sources to browse would be very helpful, as I want to get an overview first.

Have a great weekend!
