[Metadatalibrarians] some basics for organizing born-digital archives

I'm in the process of helping an organization set up an archive for born-digital photos, with an eye toward migrating them to permanent storage after a couple of years, and using METS and MODS upon migration.

I've gotten a bit lost in researching the best practices and metadata standards for such a venture. Can anyone point me to some good guides for converting born-digital camera formats like Canon's CR2? I've been using .DNG formats for adding metadata because it doesn't create or require a sidecar .XMP file. I'd like to know if I'm going down the right road.

I'm also wondering if anyone can point to a good schematic of various digital formats, jpeg2000, tiff, etc., and how they rank in importance and use in this realm.

Thanks in advance.
