Melanie, as part of the Automatic Exposure project, we did some extensive mapping work between NISOZ39.87 and related standards, including TIFF, EXIF and JPEG 2000. We also compiled statistics about how many elements actually map between these different standards. The spreadsheet I have attached was created in the summer of 2006, and it should reflect what was ratified as Z39.87, but you may want to double check to make sure - it's been a long time since I've looked at this.

For those who can't remember Automatic Exposure, the objective of the initiative was to capture standard technical metadata about digital images automatically, as part of image creation. The goals were to minimize the cost of acquiring this information and maximize its availability for preserving and maintaining access to images. While we've received a lot of positive feedback on the initiative, in the end we weren't successful in lobbying with camera manufacturers to incorporate NISO Z39.87 output into their products. We also started experimenting with Adobe XMP as a way to capture and store metadata, but ultimately found the technology not well suited to the task. I've heard anecdotally of other folks trying to create XMP panels for NISO Z39.87, but I've never heard from anybody who succeeded.

I have a couple of questions related to the ANSI/NISO Z39.87 standard for
image technical metadata:

1. Is anyone out there using all of the mandatory elements from the standard
in their technical metadata practice? If so, how are you capturing and
storing the information?
2. Has anyone performed a detailed mapping between the elements from the
