There are of course both access and display issues in granularization of names. The Union List of Artist Names -- http://www.getty.edu/research/conducting_research/vocabularies/ulan/ -- has various access forms and includes a preferred display form. VRA Core and CCO follow the same path of providing for display information as well as access points.
At NYU, we have implemented Primo from Ex Libris. Primo builds a display form of author name with first name first, and bases this display form on the comma in the AACR2-based heading. This works ok for "Sammy Davis 1925-1990. Jane Boyar; Burt Boyar" but not so well for "毛泽东, 1893-1976. ; Zedong Mao 1893-1976. 许渊冲, 1921-; Yuanchong Xu 1921-"

Leonardo da Vinci (Italian painter, draftsman, scientist, 1452-1519)
Note: Leonardo was born near Vinci, at Anchiano. He is known as the founder of the High Renaissance style. His work was extremely influential for contemporary and later artists. His writings on art and perception codified the ideals of representation and expression that dominated European teaching for the next 400 years. He is famed for his drawing of figures, representations of landscape, depiction of aerial perspective and space, the use of light and shade (chiaroscuro), and the evocation of the sitters' characters. He was also known for inventions in architecture and engineering. He often left his works unfinished, apparently losing interest after the conception of the idea. Among his best known surviving works are the "Last Supper" fresco in Milan and the "Mona Lisa" portrait in the Louvre, Paris.
