Hi Charley,

We are doing internal digitization (reformatting wounded, brittle, and out of copyright books in our general collection) with a Kirtas scanner and software. The scanner pulls metadata from our catalog (similar to the IA process) and we load the digital file and the metadata files to our IR (DSpace). Our Library Digital Projects team is currently working on a program to generate a new marc.xml file for each title with the IR handle in an 856 tag, which it will pass off to me via RSS feed to transform it to an e-book record, translate it to MARC, and then dump it back into our catalog (again, following the IA model). We also discussed harvesting The wounded and/or brittle books may or may not be retained and our Cataloging Unit creates new MARC records if a print copy of the digital file is bound for the shelves. The workflow is quite complex and involves every department in the Library.

Is this the kind of thing you're looking for?

- Nancy

The ALCTS Catalog Form & Function Interest Group is looking for
presenters for its session at ALA Midwinter, to be held from 10:30 to
12:00 on Saturday, 24 January. This year, we are looking at the
relationship between the catalog and external tools that are either fed
off of the catalog, or feed data back to the catalog. This would
include e-resource identification tools ("A-Z" e-journal lists),
audio-visual listings, archival finding aids, image databases, and
possibly even authority files, union catalogs, & bibliographic
utilities. Suggestions for approaches to the presentations might include:

    * *Workflow: * data creation, harvesting, transformation
    * *Synchronization: * post-creation record maintenance &
      synchronization between data stores
    * *Economics:* can we afford to duplicate metadata in more than one
      place?
    * *Architecture:* how close are we to using Web services for
authority or bibliographic control? where should the canonical
(mother) record reside? how frequently do we need to pass data
      between stores?

The level of discussion will be determined by the level of
interest/involvement of you, the presenter! So please indicate your
interest in presenting to Charley Pennell, Chair, CFFIG
(cpennell at ncsu.edu) by 2 December.
