I'll download and install eXist and check out the sandbox.
I could start with the UMich download of MARC21 records that I split into
1000 record files to then transform to MARCXML,DC, MODS, RDF, SOLR.
I've been experimenting with XSLT but now I'd like to get into
a workflow that would include a database.  So I could put these different
metadata types into eXist as a single or multiple collection?

Thanks for the very generous offer of sharing code, I will take up your
offer.
I find XQuery so much easier to understand that XSLT but that may be because
I understand the metadata so well.  Still hope to become proficient with
XSLT.
