Dear Steve,

I remember contacting you last year asking you if you would be offering
your course this year. I'm maxed out on my continuing ed for the rest
of the year. Will you be offering this again anytime from January to
May 2009?

Thanks,

Anna

Metadata for Digital Collections

Five-Week Online Workshop

Dates: November 10 - December 12, 2008

Fee: $325.00

Limited to 30 participants

Registration Deadline: November 3, 2007

Description:

This five-week online workshop provides a substantial introduction to
creating and managing descriptive metadata for digital image collections
in libraries, archives, and museums. It includes hands-on exercises in
creating metadata for digital images using Dublin Core, MODS, and VRA.
Participants will be

introduced to commonly-used controlled vocabularies for digital
collections, as well as to XML, OAI, metadata harvesting, mapping, and
interoperability. The workshop will also cover metadata standards
selection, project template creation, and documentation in the form of
best practice guides and application profiles.

Audience:

The workshop is intended for anyone interested in learning how to
create and manage metadata for digital collections. No prior experience
with metadata is required. This is an introductory-level continuing
education workshop for those new to metadata or those with some
experience who want a solid overview and grounding in basic descriptive
metadata concepts and practice.

Online description and registration:
https://www4.uwm.edu/sois/epayment/courses/index.cfm?a1=browse&notify=TRUE#pdi107

When registering, please use the email address of the person taking the
workshop; this address will be used in the workshop course site.

Online learning:

This is an "asynchronous" type of online learning workshop.
Approximately one week before the workshop begins, participants will
receive a login ID and password to the workshop web site, which includes
content documents, discussion forums, and an area for submitting
exercises. Interaction with the instructor and other participants
takes place through listserv-like discussion forums internal to the
course web site. There will be no "real-time" sessions during
which everyone must be online at the same time. The workshop will be
structured into units with a set of deadlines for submitting exercises
each week. Within that framework participants may work through the
content at whatever pace, location, and time of day they wish. After
exercises have been submitted, the instructor will provide feedback on
them. The workshop should take participants approximately 4-6 hours
per week. Upon completion of the workshop, each person will receive a
certificate in PDF format for printing.

Technology requirements:

> World Wide Web connection; "Pentium-class" computer (faster than
a 486) with at least 128 Mb of RAM. For PC: Internet Explorer 6 or
higher; For Mac: Mac OS X and Netscape 7.1 or higher.

> Software and ability to work with WWW, E-mail, Listservs, Acrobat PDF
Reader, E-mail Attachments, Microsoft Word, and Video Files in either
Windows Media or Real Player formats.

> Ability to contact your Internet Service Provider for technical
assistance on Internet connection and tools. The instructor will
assist with workshop courseware access and use, but will not provide
computer hardware, software, or Internet technical support.
